As a specialized local marine & cabinet grade plywood supplier and a key local marine lumber and wood supplier, Edensaw Woods (
edensaw.com) provides essential construction materials, including versatile fir plywood, to builders across Seattle-Port Townsend-Tacoma and the nearby Pacific Northwest region. Located in Port Townsend-Tacoma, Washington, we stock quality
wood panels and plywood to meet both structural and aesthetic demands.
Douglas fir plywood is a foundational panel product valued for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and structural integrity. It is widely used in residential construction, industrial applications, and marine environments when properly rated. We specifically stock grades suitable for everything from utility sheeting to structural sheathing and even marine-grade components for boat repair projects.
Technical specifications and characteristics:
- Janka Hardness Rating: Douglas Fir has an average rating of 660 lbf. While moderate, this toughness provides excellent resistance to denting and wear, making it reliable for subflooring and concrete forms.
- Color/Appearance: Heartwood is light brown to yellowish-red. The veneer features a distinct, straight, and prominent grain pattern with clear differentiation between earlywood and latewood.
- Grain/Texture: Coarse, uneven texture with a straight grain. It planes and sands reasonably well, though the difference in density between rings can make achieving a perfectly smooth finish challenging.
- Rot Resistance: The heartwood is moderately decay-resistant, but plywood durability is determined by the adhesive used. We stock both interior (moisture-resistant) and exterior/marine grade (waterproof glue) panels.
- Core Composition: Standard construction grades typically allow for minor core voids (gaps between plies), while our marine grades are specifically manufactured with minimum or no voids in the core for superior waterproof performance and bending strength.
- Workability: Works easily with hand and power tools. It holds screws and nails well, though pre-boring may be recommended near edges to prevent splitting.
- Odor: Distinctive, strong resinous odor when freshly cut.
- Sustainability: Douglas Fir is one of the most abundant and sustainably managed timber species in North America.
- Common Uses: Structural sheathing, subflooring, roof decking, concrete forming (formply), utility applications, and marine construction (when graded as marine plywood).
