Edensaw Woods (
edensaw.com) serves as the leading local imported lumber and wood supplier and local specialty decking supplier for the Seattle-Port Townsend-Tacoma region and the surrounding Pacific Northwest, operating out of Port Townsend-Tacoma, Washington. We stock a comprehensive selection of top-quality
wood panels and plywood, prominently featuring premium cherry plywood, a composite sheet material that utilizes high-grade cherry veneer for a superior aesthetic finish, making it a perfect match for high-visibility cabinet faces and fine architectural millwork.
Cherry plywood is famous for its smooth texture, rich coloring, and dramatic aging process. When first cut, the veneer is a lighter pinkish-brown, but it quickly darkens to a deep, lustrous reddish-brown or mahogany color when exposed to light. This natural photoxidative aging is highly sought after for creating classic, heirloom-quality pieces.
Technical specifications and characteristics:
- Janka Hardness Rating: Cherry (American Black Cherry) has an average rating of 950 lbf. This moderate density makes it stable, durable enough for cabinet faces, and easy to work with.
- Color/Appearance: Heartwood ranges from light to dark reddish-brown, darkening significantly over time. Sapwood is a pale, creamy yellow. The veneer surface is generally smooth and clean.
- Grain/Texture: Fine, uniform texture with a straight grain. It often exhibits a subtle, satiny luster and small, dark gum pockets (naturally occurring). We primarily stock rotary-cut veneer for a broader, more randomized look, but plain-sliced veneer (which offers a straight, cathedral grain pattern) may be available upon request.
- Rot Resistance: Classified as durable to very durable in terms of heartwood rot resistance, though the plywood form is primarily for interior use.
- Workability: Excellent machining properties. It planes, sands, and finishes exceptionally well, resulting in a smooth surface ideal for clear finishes or light stains. It also glues securely.
- Odor: Mild, pleasant aroma when being worked.
- Sustainability: American Black Cherry is responsibly harvested, making it an excellent, sustainable domestic hardwood choice.
- Common Uses: High-end cabinetry, fine furniture, architectural millwork, musical instruments, and paneling where a rich, luxurious look is desired.
Choosing the right grade is essential for the visibility of your final product. We offer various grades, most commonly:
- A-Face Grade: Features a clear, smooth veneer face with no visible defects, patches, or joints, ideal for the most visible exterior surfaces (e.g., doors and panels).
- B-Face Grade: Allows for minor natural color variation and small, infrequent gum pockets, offering a premium look at a more economical price point.
- Core Construction: Our cherry plywood typically uses multi-ply veneer cores for superior strength and stability, resisting warpage better than solid lumber panels.
